A stand-alone psychological thriller from the acclaimed author of the Alex Morrow novels that exposes the dark hearts of the guilty...and the innocent.

The "trial of the century" in 1950s Glasgow is over. Peter Manuel has been found guilty of a string of murders and is waiting to die by hanging. But every good crime story has a beginning. Manuel's starts with the murder of William Watt's family. Looking no further that Watt himself, the police are convinced he's guilty. Desperate to clear his name, Watt turns to Manuel, a career criminal who claims to have information that will finger the real killer. As Watt seeks justice with the cagey Manuel's help, everyone the pair meets has blood on their hands as they sell their version of the truth.

The Long Drop is an explosive audiobook about guilt, innocence and the power of a good story to hide the difference.

I didn't much care for this book. Not because it was poorly written. Ms Mina is one of our finest living authors, in my opinion. But this book has totally unsympathetic characters doing appalling things and mostly getting away with it. The book made me wonder if it might be a manuscript produced years ago, that she reworked and sold. End of the Wasp Season was probably the best mystery l've ever read. This is definitely not.

The Long Drop A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Denise Mina David Monteath Hachette Audio Books Reviews

Denise Mina is peerless in writing mad and bad characters, often from the inside out. I love her gritty early books the best, the Garnet Hill trilogy, the gritty characters of Glasgow, and I find this a very welcome return to that form. Love it. Tartan noir at its best.
Beautifully written scenes of the 1950's in Glasgow, giving context and culture of the times. The asides were more poignant than the plot. Descriptions of characters in a rough and tumble world of pubs and gambling clubs. The most memorable passage depicts three urchin boys playing in an abandoned luxury car and how it will affect their futures. I did not realize that the novel was based on real persons and an historic serial murder case. The long drop itself is a strange title, as it was not that interesting in the end. All in all a good read.
You know, I'm a big Denise Mina fan but this one simply didn't take. I read about 100 pp and wondered what it was all about or going to be about. That's a fair amount of time and investment for a novel (and esp one by Mina, otherwise so reliably good in other outings), so I must say I let it go.
A short book by one of my favorite authors that I could not finish.
Impossible to care about any of it and it's a true story.
This is so bad, I can't believe it was written by Denise Mina. There's nothing redeeming about any of the characters. I'm one third (approximately) through and have to give up. It doesn't seem to be going anywhere, and its so depressing I can't finish it.
At first I was disappointed to find this was a stand alone, having grown fond of the character Alex in her previous books. But once I began reading, I was totally captivated by the story and the characters. This is gritty Scotland at its lowest depths. The characters aren't likeable nor are they supposed to be. Did William Watt hire someone to kill his wife? If so, the book never really answers why. Even late in the book we're told of a connection between Peter Manuel attending Mass and his worst offenses, but this isn't explored further. Was justice completely served? Obviously not completely. Did Peter Manuel have an accomplice who continued killing? Very probably. This questions left me wanting so much more.

As always Denise Mina's writing style is beyond exquisite. She paints such wonderfully vivid pictures of each character and their actions that I feel as if I'm in the room with them. In particular, her portrait of Peter's mother was heartbreaking. How must a mother feel, knowing that her son is evil, but loving him all the same? This writing is Mina at her finest.
Denise Mina's new thriller, The Long Drop, was a Washington Post Book of the Year for 2017. The book is based on contemporaneous accounts and two later books about the trial of Peter Manuel, who came to be known as "Scotland's first serial killer." Manuel was a career criminal who had come to the attention of the police as early as age 10 and was imprisoned at 16 for a series of brutal sexual attacks. The action takes place over the seven-month period from December 1957 through July 1958. Manuel was hanged on July 11, 1958, having been convicted of seven gruesome murders.

Mina's account of the Peter Manuel story revolves around his relationship with a Glasgow businessman named William Watt. Watt was the owner of a successful chain of bakeries who aspired to high social standing in the city. That possibility was put to rest when he was imprisoned for the murder of his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law. Watt had been elsewhere the night his family was killed, but his social awkwardness and difficulty in communicating had failed to persuade the police of his innocence. He sought out Manuel in hopes of securing either a confession or evidence that would implicate a third man.

Mina tells the story of the long, drunken night Watt and Manuel spent together shortly before Christmas 1957 in short chapters, alternating with chapters based on transcripts from Manuel's trial in May 1958. Even a reader sated with tales about serial killers is likely to find Mina's account of the Peter Manuel story compelling.

Both Manuel and Watt come across as such peculiar individuals that I would have had difficulty believing the story had I not known Mina based the book on the facts.
